Diploma of Community Services

QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW

This qualification reflects the roles of community services, case management and social housing workers involved in the managing, co-ordinating and/or delivering of person-centred services to individuals, groups and communities.

At this level, workers have specialised skills in community services and work autonomously under broad directions from senior management. Workers are usually providing direct support to individuals or groups of individuals. Workers may also have responsibility for the supervision of other workers and volunteers and/or case management; program coordination or the development of new business opportunities.

Note that the Statutory & forensic child, youth & family welfare specialisation must be achieved in order to meet the minimum education requirements for child protection and youth justice practice in Victoria. In addition, to meet the minimum education requirements for entry into child protection practice in Victoria, diploma qualifications must be approved by the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA)

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 100 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification specified within the CHC Community Services Training Package.  However, students are expected to.

  • Apply for police check before commencing their work placement
  • Hold working with children check
  • Be aged 18 and over
  • Participate in Pre-training review process and complete LLN Test
  • Have suitable Language, Literacy, Numeracy (LLN) skills to successfully complete the qualification.

    Total number of units = 16

    • 8 core units
    • 8 elective units, consisting of:
      • at least 6 units from the electives listed below
      • up to 2 units from the electives listed below, any endorsed Training Packages or accredited courses – these units must be relevant to the work outcome

     

    Any combination of electives that meets the rules above can be selected for the award of the Diploma of Community Services.     These competencies have been drawn from the nationally endorsed industry training package the Community Services Training Package (CHC). Upon successful completion of the training and assessment, the qualification CHC52015 Diploma of Community Services will be issued within 30 days of completion of the Qualification. A Statement of Attainment will be issued who are not able to complete the qualification but have completed few units. Statement of Attainment is not considered a complete Qualification.

    56 Weeks including three weeks term break and four weeks of practical placement.

    Students are required to undertake 100 hours of practical placement at a community care settings. Students may need to spend 25 hours each week over a period of four weeks.

    Following Assessment methods and evidence gathering methods will be used:

    A – Written questions B – Case Study
    C – Project D –  Role Play
    E – Research F – Workplace activity
    G- Observation/Demonstration  

    After successful completion of this qualification student may expect to have following job outcomes:

    After completion of this qualification students may undertake CHC62015 Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management.

    Students may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) if they possess any formal or informal experience related to the industry. Students will be assessed against the competency by an assessor.

    You may eligible for Credit Transfer if you have undertaken formal study previously. To be eligible for credit transfer you need to submit provide original certificates for verification.

    Each student enrolling in this course will need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number. Certification will not be issued until you have a valid USI number.

    In few instances students, may be exempt from USI but before availing any exemption please consider as your transcript will not be available on USI System.
